Like most researchers, Andrew Ejike gets dressed and leaves his house at Enugu city in the afternoon. A computer laptop bag, which he carries like a suitcase, indicates he is going to the workplace. When he returns home in the day, his neighbors frequently ask:”How was work today?” And he answers by saying,”Work was nice”.
Interestingly, Ejike does not have work, and certainly doesn’t have an official employment. He’s unemployed.
But he’s’created’ a’job’ for themself. He is, more or less, a ‘professional’ punter. Sports gambling is what Ejike does and when he leaves ‘work’ each morning on working times, the’office’ he goes is actually any sports pub about town.
On getting to the bar, Ejike would install his laptop, connect to the Internet using a mobile device, open the web site of some of the mobile sports gambling companies and begin working on forecasts, or permutations, in order to come up with the stakes he’d place to your day.
A bachelor’s degree holder in Estate Management from a federal university, Ejike has been sustaining himself and his young family with proceeds from sports gambling after failing to secure a steady occupation since he graduated more than ten decades ago.
In a conversation with our correspondent, Ejike explained that he dropped two previous jobs after the firms that he was working for shut down.
“The cover in the jobs was not much anyway but I believe there is dignity in labor. I was also expecting that along the line I would get something larger and more stable. But I could not even hold on to these jobs since the companies shut down and nothing better came together,” he said.
